June 2022 GRAIN TRUST MEETING

The next Grain Trust homebrew club meeting will be 6:00PM Friday, June 17, 2022.

In the back room of Clandestine Brewing.

This month we will be talking about updates on local competitions and NCHF (the Northern California Homebrewer’s Festival).

Given that COVID cases are at a fairly high level in Santa Clara County, we’ve arranged for the roll up door to be opened, thereby allowing fresh air into the meeting space.
The weather forecast is calling for a cool evening on Friday, so be prepared for the potential effects on the meeting space.
As well, you might want to bring a mask for times where you may be in spaces outside of the meeting room.
And, of course, if you are not feeling well, please refrain from attending.

For those planning to bring homebrew, it would be great (but not required) if you could send Howard a brief description of your beers, so we can have a reasonable tasting order.
Please include Style, alcohol content and bitterness at a minimum.
Other info such as ingredients, mash and fermentation conditions, etc., are always welcome (especially if there is a story behind the beer).

APRIL 2022 GRAIN TRUST MEETING

As usual, we’ll be focusing on beers that we bring–be sure to get your descriptions to Harry Graham a day or so ahead of the meeting.

Just a reminder.
We will be sampling Maibocks at next month’s Grain Trust meeting.
So get your Maibock ready by May 20.

February is strong beer month in places, and we’ll be picking up on that theme during the meeting.
If you have some (strong) homebrew to share, feel free to bring it.
Clandestine is unveiling a number of strong beers this Saturday, so we’ll all be able to purchase “compatible” beers assuming they’re not all gone by the following Friday.

And Sunday February 20th, the Grain Trust will be brewing at the FreeWheel Battle of the Brew Clubs in Redwood City.

The Grain Trust has participated in every one of these since their inception in 2016, winning twice and finishing second twice.

This year, we’ll brew again, staying true to the theme of Admiral Capay Rye.

Anil has a recipe for California Common that has 20% rye and has already been tested on TGT, receiving a lot of favorable comments.
So, we’ll go with that recipe.

If you’re interested in participating, the event starts at around 10:30 AM.
Just show up and join our team–as a bonus, draft beers are only $5/pint for members of all brewing teams.

If we win, they will invite us to brew the beer inside on their 6-barrel system.

JANUARY 2022 GRAIN TRUST MEETING

The next Grain Trust homebrew club meeting will be 7:00PM Friday, January 21.

Finally, as a heads up, the theme for the February meeting is Strong Beer.
While it’s only 4 1/2 weeks away, there should be enough time to brew something that’s hopefully North of 8% ABV (but it’s not a requirement).
This would be a good time to bring out that Barleywine that you brewed 4 years ago and is collecting dust in the back of your closet.
Or brew an Imperial IPA–no rules on style.

December 2021 GRAIN TRUST MEETING

The next Grain Trust homebrew club meeting will be 6:00PM Friday, December 17.

In the back room of Clandestine Brewing.

The December meeting will be more of a holiday event with a theme centered on beer and food pairings.
Bonus points (maybe ‘bonus esteem’) will be granted to those who pair food with their own homebrew, but it’s not a requirement.
So, put your taste buds to work and start getting some ideas.
It will be very interesting to see what people bring.

Howard sent the following email to Grain Trust membership November 7, 2021.

Hello Fellow Trustees:
November is here!
And we’ve already had rain! But being stout brewers and beer aficionados, it can’t dampen our spirits.
So, we’ll be gathering again this month for our usual meeting. The date is Friday, November 19th and we’ll be meeting at 7 PM at Clandestine Brewing in SJ.

Feel free to show up anytime after they open at 4, and remember that proof of vaccination is required for inside seating.

As usual, we’ll be focusing on beers that we bring–be sure to get your descriptions to Harry Graham a day or so ahead of the meeting.

Looking ahead to December, we plan to hold to our usual schedule, which would place us on Friday the 17th.
That one will be more of a holiday event with a theme centered on beer and food pairings.
Bonus points (maybe ‘bonus esteem’) will be granted to those who pair food with their own homebrew, but it’s not a requirement.
So, put your taste buds to work and start getting some ideas.
It will be very interesting to see what people bring.

See you on the 19th!

Howard chronicled the following from the September 2021 Grain Trust meeting.

  • One thing we decided concretely is that we’ll move the strong beer challenge out to February, 2022. This will coincide with “Strong Beer Month”.
  • Several of us have wanted to do a cask ale style/challenge this year, and our stake in the ground is to do it in November. For this meeting, you brew a beer that would be appropriate to serve on a beer engine at cellar temperature. Ideally, you rack it into a collapsible water bottle (the 1.3 gallon version) for conditioning, then bring it to the meeting location a day or so ahead of time. Harry and Kim have volunteered their patio on which to hold the meeting (with a patio heater). They have a beer engine set up in their basement, which will be at the perfect serving temperature.
